New AI opportunities for Liverpool’s students

Liverpool City Region is set to create hundreds of new jobs thanks to huge investment in the artificial intelligence sector following the unveiling of Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s ‘AI Opportunities Action Plan’ on Monday 13 January.

The Prime Minister outlined how he believes the government can deliver a decade of national renewal by unleashing the potential of the AI industry.

And our region looks set to be one of the biggest beneficiaries of the plan – on the same day, Liverpool City Region’s (LCR) Metro Mayor, Steve Rotheram, announced that US tech firm Kyndryl is planning to invest millions into building a new tech hub within LCR, creating approximately 1,000 new jobs.

Late November 2024 saw the first Liverpool City Region International AI Summit held at Boxpark in Cains Brewery Village. Supported by techUK, University of Liverpool, Microsoft, LCR Connect and UST, the AI Summit exhibited the incredible tech talent ingrained throughout our region, bringing it to the fore and showcasing our vision of AI-led technology to the world.

Creating new AI infrastructure in the shape of Kyndryl’s AI hub shows that LCR is not only ready to attract international investment, but that we’re ready to become a global leader in the artificial intelligence sector and use it to unlock potential across the region.

Most of all, we’re extremely excited at The Studio for what this new hub means for our students – both for now and long into the future.

One of our biggest strengths at The Studio is how we educate pupils and arm them with the knowledge they need to not only survive in a digital-first world, but to thrive and succeed with the skills we teach them.

Artificial intelligence is still in its extremely formative stages, but already offers stellar career paths for technology-literate students to explore, experiment with and begin working towards.

“A dedicated AI hub in the region will not only provide new destinations and opportunities for our graduates to consider once they finish their time at The Studio. It could also offer work experience opportunities, practical training, networking opportunities at more to help spark their imaginations and create something that may truly change the world,” says Enda Carey, Sector Skills Champion at The Studio School, Liverpool.

“Importantly, it could also help us to keep our brightest minds within Liverpool City Region, with their long-term contributions to the sector making us a guiding light to other regions and nations as we encourage their tech talents to flourish.”

Of the Kyndryl news, Steve Rotheram said: “I’m really glad that we’ve been able to attract Kyndryl to our area, having met with them on our trade mission to New York last year.   “This announcement shows how, together with Prime Minister Keir Starmer and his government, we’re delivering real, tangible change for working people across our communities. With 1,000 new AI jobs coming to the Liverpool City Region over the next three years, we’re not just creating opportunities for today but laying the foundations for the jobs of the future.
