This week (8 – 14 February) is National Apprenticeship Week 2021. It is a chance to share and celebrate how apprenticeships are a great pathway to career success and a brilliant alternative to full time college and university.
We recognise that sometimes apprenticeships are more challenging to find than university courses, and that sometimes people think they are a less academic option – but we are here to say that apprenticeships are an amazing option for young people who want to earn money and build a bank of relevant work experience alongside achieving their degree qualification.
Over the past years, our students have gone on to some incredible opportunities including with Unilever, Dyson and Barclays. These students have been able to achieve degrees from top UK universities whilst working in well paid roles within the organisation. This gives them an incredible advantage over their peers as they have practical skills, work place experience, and no student debt.
There are over 1,500 apprenticeship job roles available in a wide range of industries and sectors involved. We are excited that a number of our business partners now offer degree and higher apprenticeships and we highly recommend these options to our students.
How do I find an apprenticeship? If you are researching apprenticeship vacancies, you will need to think about how, where and when you search for jobs. You will need to sign up to vacancy alerts, follow companies on social media and be proactive in approaching companies and asking for work experience or attending virtual open days to get yourself noticed by employers. Specific employers will also advertise apprenticeship opportunities, including through many of the well-known job websites and through their own websites.
Mr McCann and Sam will work with students applying for an apprenticeship throughout the spring and summer term and post lots of vacancies and support with applications on the Destinations Google Classroom.
